Clicking on a hyperlink to a document library, folder, or document set normally causes that library, folder, document set to be opened in the SharePoint browser and clicking on a hyperlink to a document opens the document in the applicable application.
The DMF Protocol Handler allows documents to be opened in the relevant application as if they had been opened using MacroView DMF, or if the hyperlink is to a library, folder or document set, opens the location in DMF Explorer.
Clicking on a hyperlink with the DMF Protocol Handler prefix (dmf: or dmfs:) on any computer with MacroView DMF installed will cause the DMF Protocol Handler to process the hyperlink.
If the UseProtocolHandlerForLinks option is enabled in MacroView DMF or Message, any links generated using the Copy as Link or Send as Link functions are automatically prefixed with the DMF Protocol Handler corresponding with the protocol handler of the original hyperlink. e.g. http:// or https://
dmf://server/library/file.docx or dmfs://server/library/file.docx
Hyperlinks generated using Copy as Link and Send as Link in versions of MacroView DMF prior to 8.6.103 always include the dmf: prefix and include the original protocol handler.
dmf:http://server/library/file.docx or dmf://https:/server/library/file.docx
Both link formats above are respected when using DMF or Message 8.6.103 or later.
Storing such hyperlinks as part of the record for a project / matter / assignment in an external line of business system is a useful way of allowing users quick access to such projects / matters / assignments.
The Navigate to URL function in MacroView DMF also supports navigation to URLs that include a DMF Protocol Handler prefix.
Enabling the DMF Protocol Handler
The automatic insertion of the protocol handler prefix can be enabled by adding or editing the UseProtocolHandlerForLinks setting in the following user registry key.
